As part of Torfaen County County Borough Council's 21st Century Schools Programme we have undertaken the bespoke standardised design plan for Ysgol Panteg Welsh Medium Primary School in Pontypool, Llantarnum Primary School in Cwmbran and Blenheim Road Community Primary School in Cwmbran.
The design allows for a similar school design to be customised for the individual circumstances that apply to each of the sites. Each school has a 52 part time equivalent nursery provision, with Panteg having a two form entry with 420 places and Llantarnum and Blenheim Road each with a 1 1/2 form entry with 315 places, each of the latter with provision for extension to 420 places as/when required.
The main entrance to each school is located in a visible location at the front of each site, accommodates the administration area and acts as a secure access point to the whole of the school site. The building itself forms part of the security strategy for the site, securing the private play area and grounds beyond.
Each school has a single storey classroom teaching area and the hall and catering area double height. The design is a simple building form which makes wayfinding very easy. Each school year has a pair of classrooms each with its own toilet facilities. All the classrooms are designed around a central street space which is top lit and includes zoned break out space for group ICT and library/reading etc. and glass open-top pods for small group or one to one teaching.
