Energy Efficient School Opens

Apr 2010
This project in Merthyr Tydfil is the first of a new generation of energy efficient schools where the reduction of carbon emissions and sustainable development is one of the primary forces.

The single storey 1,748 sq.m. footprint incorporates passive stack ventilation, ground source heat pumps, solar panels and rainwater harvesting. The school has been designed to achieve a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’.

Informal play areas, soft landscaping and teaching habitat areas are integrated into the first phase of the development. The site is relatively quiet and located in a semi-rural area surrounded by houses on two sides.

Three options were designed and each has an exclusion zone of 18.0 metres between the classroom and nearest habitable room. It is anticipated that the outside spaces within this zone will become an outdoor classroom area. The construction of an outdoor amphitheatre gives opportunities for story-telling for some of the younger children during the day and also provides an innovative play area for socializing during play times.
