Glynn Vivian Art Gallery Swansea Grand Opening

Oct 2016

Swansea's iconic Glynn Vivian Art Gallery was re-opened to the public on Saturday 15th October following the completion of a multi-million pound redevelopment and restoration project that Powell Dobson were delighted to be involved in.

New spaces for lectures, expert conservation works, touring exhibitions and collection displays are among the improvements visitors can look forward to.

A new state of the art extension links the historic buildings, including the Grade II Listed 1911 display, which has benefitted from complete restoration and improvements to facilities and access, all of which ensure the Glynn Vivian is fit for the 21st Century.

A new collection store for artworks has also been added, as well as a fully accessible entrance that means more people than ever will enjoy greatly improved access to the artworks.

The redeveloped Gallery will offer:

  • Conservation of the 1911 Grade II Listed Building
  • A new entrance and shop at street level
  • Re-design of the 1974 gallery extension and a new glazed link structure
  • A new passenger lift to allow full physical access to all exhibitions and collection galleries and all education and study facilities as well as other areas
  • More space for the display of collections and exhibitions
  • A new storage and conservation area to enable the future development of the collections
  • New technical areas and administrative offices
  • Renewal of the existing learning studio and improved facilities for working with schools, colleges and our participants
  • A new lecture space and community room
  • A dedicated library and archive devoted to visitor research
  • A new cafe, shop and full wi-fi access

The redevelopment and restoration project has been funded by the Arts Council of Wales, Swansea Council, the Welsh Government and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
