Powell Dobson celebrates 50 years in business

Jan 2016

Powell Dobson is one of Wales' leading architectural practices and celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year. Set up in 1966, Powell Dobson has grown from a small office in Cardiff to become one of the official top 100 architectural firms in the UK as recognised by industry bible, The Architects Journal.

The Practice now employs 80+ staff from its three offices in Cardiff, Swansea and London. We have worked on many high profile projects in Wales and throughout the UK.

Upon facing redundancy from the Cardiff regional office of a large London practice in 1966, Wyndham Powell went out on his own, landing a number of small clients. Joined by David Dobson in 1972, he soon felt able to expand, creating the Powell Dobson Partnership in 1975.

A good relationship with Brains Brewery on pub refurbishment had been established during this time, and the big break came in 1975 when the practice won a £3-million contract (equivalent to £20+ million today) to refurbish the existing Brains Brewery and to extend it to double the brewing capacity.

In 1993, the Partnership won the £12 million contract to design the Brewery Quarter, the residential and leisure development in St Mary Street, Cardiff that went on to win a number of design accolades.

The Practice grew from strength to strength from the late Eighties, opening a Swansea office in 1989 and working on projects not only in Wales but throughout England and as far afield as Lisbon as its reputation spread. Since then, awards for the quality of the firms work continue to flood in.

In 2008, Powell Dobson launched its third office in Kew, London which now has a complement of 16 staff and won contracts such as Paddington Exchange, North Wharf Gardens Phase 2 and Battersea Retirement Living Scheme.

Now in our 50th year, we are hoping for further success and wish all our clients a Happy New Year.
